Performance, Theatro Santa Isabel, Recife, Brazil, 2010

I made several hundred photographs of this dancer and her colleagues during a performance of Brazilian carnival dance in Recife’s historic opera house. Dance is about poise, energy and movement, and this is the image that I felt most effectively defined this performance for me. It is rich in blur, yet clearly defines the flow of the movement itself. We can see the dancer’s expression through the blur – her eyes are closed, her face a mask of confidence and pride. She holds a doll in one hand -- it throbs with blur. Meanwhile, her other hand is held high, her arm thrust a gesture of accomplishment.

Thanks, Carol. This performance was held on stage at Recife's historic opera house. I was seated in the first row, so had a good vantage point for this shot, and I could benefit from the abstracting qualities of the theatrical lighting as well. And yes, I purposely placed the subject on the left hand side of the frame, looking into that dark area, which implies future motion. Given the fact that your example (http://www.pbase.com/image/133251926 ) was shot in a room at a library, you managed to do very well in capturing some of the same qualities I was trying to express in my own example here.

Yes, the motion of a twirl by the dancer with the very colorful costumes does paint a picture of the wonderful dance in Brazil. At least you got to shoot with a plain dark background....for me this dance performance was held in an all purpose room of a library! Cluttered background was indeed a big challenge. Your image does seem to express the same qualities of joy and freedom by the cultural dancers. I also like the fact that you have placed the dancers off center leaving a plain black void to the right, into which they will dance into.
