Even though Sujay was of the Brahmin caste, Ratna's family was higher in the caste. Therefore, their marriage would not have been approved. But, Sujay and Ratna fell in love and secretly dated for years. Knowing that Ratna's family was searching for a husband for her, they ran away and eloped. After finding them, the families grudgingly agreed to have a wedding to make the marriage "formal," but even after 23 years of marriage and two children, Sujay and Ratna have never accepted into either family. Very sad.
