20100525 971 SERIES Grey Heron - Blauwe Reiger.jpg

Medemblik, The Netherlands

Three consecutive images of a Grey Heron plus one Pano of the three showing a typical Dutch scene as viewed from the bungalow park where we stayed. The Bungalowpark was constructed so that each bungalow backed on to a moat which in turn connected to a canal like the one in these images. There were an abundance of waterfowl in the moats, canals and adjacent ponds. Note: The Grey Heron is slightly smaller than The Great Blue Heron commonly seen in North America.

Top image: First shot of the The Grey Heron flying over the canal.

Second shot of the Grey Heron. Note the tough Dutch lady sunbathing on the right end of the dock. She was still there several hours later in spite of the cold (12 degrees C) and cloudy conditions.

Third and final shot of the Heron in flight.

Pano of the top three images giving an overall view of the shore-line and homes. No, there are not three Herons in the picture.

P.S. The tough Dutch lady shown in the second image turned out not to be so tough after all. When I got back home to Canada, my computer screen showed it to be a mannequin dressed in a swim suit. Looks like this tourist too got taken in by a practical Dutch joker.

Really interesting set of images. Must say, the setting for the bungalowpark is wonderful. I thought the grey heron was considered conspecific with our great blue, but perhaps that was decided against.
