The Cavalry
Those of you that know me, know how much I hate winter. I hate the cold, I hate the snow, I hate the clouds, I hate it all.....yes, even during Christmas. The only part of winter that I like are the plow trucks.
Ever since I was a kid I have always looked at plow trucks with wide eyed amazement. When I was young, I grew up on a cul-de-sac. A snow day was fun. You got to be off school and play in the snow, sure, but the day became awesome when you saw that plow truck coming down the street. They would pile snow up, I swear, 100 feet high. It looked like the Alps and begged to be conquered, dug through, sledded down, and claimed in a game of “King of the Hill.”
My real admiration didn’t come until I was in the military. I was driving home from Fort A.P. Hill, VA and hit a storm on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. I couldn’t see anything, including the road. I was about to pull off for the night when a plow truck came up behind me, lights flashing and throwing snow like nobody’s business. I fell in behind that truck and followed him all the way to the OH line. From there I picked up another truck and another truck until I got home. From that point on I have always felt like they were the Calvary.
There is a certain comfort you feel when you are on bad roads and you see that truck coming. You know that everything in your life just got a little bit better.
I was driving by our service department today and I saw the salt barn. There is something about it that is just badass to me. Maybe it is the piles of salt waiting to go out, maybe it’s the flag flying above, maybe it’s just the sheer size of the thing. Either way, when I saw it I thought one thing......”January 2nd.”
I’ve said it before, I love that my PaD forces me to look for pictures. It forces me to look for lines and reflections and things that need their story told. It forces me to get my camera out for something other than a little girl with pigtails and dressed in the finest that Gap has to offer.
So here we are, January 2nd and all’s well. Full steam ahead, my friends.
