Red Colobus Monkey (Procolobus Kirkii)

When Zanzibar separated from Africa at least 10,000 years ago,the Red Colobus monkey species (or "Kimapunju" in Swahili) evolved separately from its mainland relatives and is now endemic to Zanzibar. Population around 2,500 individuals, or over half of the species, lives in " Josani Chwaka Bay National Park" in Zanzibar. These monkeys eat acidic, unripe fruits as well as juvenile leaves. They are very social and allow up-close encounters and excellent photo opportunities.
