I lived one block to the east and one block to the south from December 1967 to July 1970 while stationed in Tampa with the USCG. The 7-Eleven gas station on the far corner used to be an Enco then Exxon full service gas station with double bay garage with all concrete and no trees at all. It appears that they expanded the station to the south to provide room for the 7-Eleven convenience store south of the gas pumps. I don't remember the trees on the closest corner either so the folks on Davis Island have been beautifying the commercial district by adding trees and brick pavers to the intersections over the years. Great job, it is far more attractive than solid asphalt and concrete.
