Round hay bales are so tightly wound that they create their own thatched roofs, in effect, making it possible to keep them outdoors rather than go into debt to build or maintain a hay barn. The machines that wind hay into these several-hundred-pound bales will do the same thing to a farmhand who accidentally lets a sleeve get caught in the mechanism. The University of Vermont has found that farmers are 8 times more likely to have accidents than other workers--something to think about when viewing the picturesque sights of Vermont's haying season.
