Reflections, Mission Beach, San Diego, California, 2010

A contemporary beach house acts here as a reflector, playing back the reflections of the evening sun on its many windows. Meanwhile, the strollers on the boardwalk below never notice them. The reflections can be seen only from well out on the beach itself. When shooting reflections, it is important that we keep moving to make them change in appearance and intensity.

Contemporary architecture often reflects the nature of form for the sake of form itself, rather than as a place for living and sharing. I think that is what we see here -- the windows do not invite us in. Rather they reflect what is outside. The figures walking in opposite directions seem to represent separation and isolation, rather than community.

There is for me in this design of a house a sense of coldness and separation. Here the figures walking away from each other seems to echo that sense.

The palms are bending here on their own. The lens has nothing to do with that bent. And yes, they do contrast to the rigidity of the rectangular architecture here.

Are the palm trees naturally curved, or is it some sort of lens bending? They're a stunning contrast to all the rectangles in the building.
