Red Flower

I was out last night, trying out my new Nikon 300s. These 4 images are closeups of flowers, taken with my telephoto lens. I didn't start out taking closeups, but this was the only lens with me at the time so that is what I used.
This is not a good image. The red lacks detail and the unedited image was overexposed. I decreased brightness and contrast a bit but it didn't really help.
Please feel free to critique and comment on what might have been done differently.

Hi Ed,
I think you did well overall on the flower shots. Sometimes using a telephoto for close-ups is good since it gives a nice blurred background. It's hard to take a photo that doesn't blow out the red channel. A lot of cameras will do this. For the higher end cameras, like yours, there should be settings to help. One is to turn the contrast setting right down in your camera. You can always increase it when editing. There is probably a setting in the menu whereby you can tone down the red channel, and again, if you have to make it more red or brighter it can be done by your editing software.
Your new camera has lots of setting combinations, so it'll take time to find the right combination that works for you. Don't know if I've helped or not, lol, but I know if you keep asking questions someone will have the answer. And of course there's always dpreview, lol.
