Broken Floodwalls Following Hurricane Katrina

New Orleans

As we near the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and the flooding of New Orleans, I want to congratulate the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers for their magnificent style of building floodwalls. Never mind that their negligence took 1800 lives and flooded 80 per cent of the City. Never mind that thousands have never returned to their homes because there are none to return to. Never mind that we aged 10 years in one month and spent millions to rebuild our houses and that our hearts were broken as we buried friends.
Getting to this five year anniversary will be good for everyone. We'll hopefully be able to put it behind us, though never forget it. The City has a new Mayor who seems to be moving forward at great speed to rebuild it. The television, local and national, are full of Katrina stories, some not true and some grossly exaggerated. And, of course, they throw in the politics. We'll have to go through this again in five years when we celebrate the great oil gush of 2010--something to look forward to.........
On Sunday, I am having a big dinner with family and friends and am cooking my infamous barbecue shrimp---hopefully they won't be oily except for my olive oil and butter.

Breaks my heart to think about it all. Many of those who lost everything have settled here in Houston, so there is a kinship between our cities, and the loss is still so fresh in our minds.

I developed an allergy to shrimp in my old age . . . but I can dream I'm there and eating a boatload.

Oh, but the Army Corp of Engineers does everything so well and perfect! Yeah, right I say in my most sarcastic tone. Love the photojournalism. Great pic. Enjoy the shrimp...sure sounds good to me!

Make sure the shrimp are not Chineese, or not from the Gulf Coast. Guess I just ruined any chances of going back to Louisiana with that one.

Oh dear, sad story Coleen. Here's hoping the new mayor will get something moving at long last!
