Praying Mantis (Mantis religiosa)

Near Shirleys Bay. I was walking along a trail through a densely vegetated field when I became aware that something was sitting on my shoulder. It was this guy! Well, I had been hoping to see one, and looking without success (even though they are common), so I guess this one decided to find me instead. I think they are such amazingly odd insects, with those long, spiny forelegs, and their trianglular head which they can turn to look over their shoulder, a feat most insects cannot emulate. This is the common and familiar introduced European mantis. It is a beneficial predator of destructive insects, and because of that is looked upon favourably by those who know how useful they are in gardens. The egg cases of another introduced mantis, the Chinese Mantis, are often sold in garden centres for this reason.

So that's how to find these amazing creatures. Great image showing off his tools of his trade. V

I love them! I had a "pet" mantis when I was a kid. :) V

Totally fabulous. How I wish to see one, too. When I did my insect course, I found that I became much more attuned and I began to see little critters where I was blind to them before. Your capture is beyond exceptional, a vision of a sculpturesque creature, and the framing is great, too. VVVVV
