Dogwood spittlebug (Clastoptera proteus), adult, leaving its shed skin behind

Morris Island Conservation Area. One dogwood shrub had many spittlebug cases (the white foamy stuff), and a number of newly emerged adults, such as here. In this photo the adult bug has just emerged from the final nymph stage and is leaving its shed skin.

The nymph in its spittle case can be seen here: http://www.pbase.com/image/125965852
