Tourist train, Durango, Colorado, 2010

I framed these tourists within a window of an early morning steam train. Seen in profile, they stare straight ahead, their expressions passive. What should be a moment of anticipation, just minutes away from a steamy ride into the mountains of central Colorado, seems instead a chance to perhaps catch a quick nap before the three-hour journey begins. The stolid expressions are contrasted to vivid primary colors – the bright yellow railroad car and the man’s red hat.

I could have called this image "Waiting," which has probably caused the stoic stance here. As for the lurking photographer, beware of those bearing 300mm lenses. I was able to reach across a considerable distance to frame this image.

The hour is early; the wait has probably been long. We've all probably had a version of these stolid expressions while sitting and waiting for something to begin. Now I'm going to be more cognizant of this because a photographer may me lurking close by!

I agree -- the expressions tell us that at this moment, these tourists are taking a "show me" point of view towards the experience that awaits them. The curtain has yet to rise on that show -- it is up to the viewer to imagine how they will react when the smoke starts to fly and the whistle starts to blow.

The set of their mouths says to me that it is going to take a lot to impress these tourists - good luck tourist train.
