Multitasking, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 2010

I made this street image because I liked the contrast of activities here – one woman walks a dog and window-shops, while the other, following a few feet behind her, talks to someone else on her cell phone. I also like the incongruent body language here – the restless dog appears to have a mind of its own, its owner ignores it for the moment, while the woman on the phone seems to be using an arm to an ear to shut out street noises.

I did not analyze the difference in costume when I shot this image, Iris, but now that you mention it, it does lend another layer of potential meaning here. There are numerous contrasts here -- one schleps a dog while the other carries a purse, one looks at windows while the other looks at nothing, one leads while the other follows, and now you add the difference in dress as well. To me, another key to the image was the third party here -- the dog, which as I noted, displays a mind of its own.

Also, the difference in dress contrasts the ease and casualness of the woman walking the dog with the more formal demeanor of the woman on the phone. The woman casually dressed seems to be enjoying her walk and is more in tune with her surroundings, while the other one exudes more tension and is not paying much attention to her environment.

A quiet evening walk disrupted by the desire to satisfy another need. It is the story of our times, Rob.

Different gestures, different activities. The woman walking out the dog seems to be in a relax time, where as the other one is talking about some appointment, or dating. She can't stop her workflow.
