Sunset, The Plaza, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 2010

The sun was fading slowly behind a lightly overcast sky. I liked the horizontal streaks in the clouds and the way the diffused sun warmed the facades of the vintage buildings surrounding Santa Fe’s famous Plaza. I did not count on a pigeon to fly through my frame at the moment I shot, but I will accept this gift of nature. The pigeon’s fluttering wings elevates this image from an evening mood piece to a memorable salute from the natural world.

I love how you see relationships in photographs, Tim -- your mind and eye express juxtapositions that I would have never even considered, such as the shadow of a flying bird and a glass bulb in a streetlight just below it. That is why you are a remarkable photographer. In your imagery, you reveal aspects of life that would otherwise go unnoticed, and now you do so for the images of others, as well. Thank you for this comment.

I note an interesting interaction between the pigeon and the bulb on the streetlight. The bird adds shadow to the sky while the light opens a whiteness on the building. It is like the two circles on the yin-yang symbol.

Thanks, Claudia and Rose, for your comments. Sunset is, in itself, a closure to day. The curtain falls as the earth turns and the sun drops below the horizon. This image is indeed a farewell, and the flutter of those wings only accentuate it.

Twilight's last gleaming...

...and i was going to say (after reading your own caption) that the pigeon makes this image even more peaceful, another day gone and it feels good. I like this rendez-vous with last moments of daylight on the buildings just before it goes away until the next time...
