Red eft (Notophthalmus viridescens viridescens)

Marlborough Forest. The red eft is the terrestrial stage of the Red-spotted Newt. It is neither larva nor adult, but somewhere in between. They are relatively common in this stage, but the newts are much harder to spot as they are mostly aquatic.

A fine composition, what wonderful color, detail and clarity, a beautiful creature. He is very small, judging by the rocks. We have tiny black ones here and they play dead when spotted. V
