We don't see a lot of quail when we are traveling around the island, just an occasional encounter now and then. Today I was out to check the eagle nest and about 100 yards from it I met up with a covey of quail. Now these had to be really brave or really stupid birds to be hanging around an eagle nest, particularly one with three hungry eaglets, however today they escaped the 'eagle eyes' of the parents....perhaps not brave or smart, just lucky. California Quail facts: These birds do not migrate, they are year-round residents. Although this bird coexists well at the edges of urban areas, it is declining in some areas as human populations increase. They were originally found mainly in the southwestern United States, but they have been introduced into other areas including British Columbia, Hawaii, Chile, New Zealand, and to Norfolk Island. ~ Absolute Astronomy
