Dacaisnea fargesii.jpg

Interesting small tree. New growth in spring is dark purple, almost black. Gives way to large green pinnate leaves. Huge green beans form over summer turning a brilliant metallic blue in autumn. The pulp surrounding the seeds is sweet and edible though the consistency and texture is unusual. It reminds me of slightly overripe watermelon. The common name for this shrub both fascinates and horrifies children: "Dead man's fingers"
