Pentax's first model DSLR: *istD

My wife's Macro lens and DSLR bring back many fond memories.

1. The Macro Lens. In the film days my wife always talked about some day getting a Macro lens.
She always considered that an extravagance she could not afford. I found this manual lens for
sale used for $300 and gave it to her. She mounted it on her Pentax K1000 and headed outside
to photograph flowers, bees, butterflys, Damselflys, and most everything close bye.

2. The DSLR. I knew she was thinking about a DSLR. Canon and Nikon came out with them first.
I watched the ads waiting for Pentax to announce. Finally one appeared with the bizarre name
of *istD. I bought one over the counter after verifying it would work with her existing manual
film lenses. All Pentax DSLRs work with all Pentax/Asahi lenses, and Asahi was the first SLR
made in Japan. She was delighted when she opened the gift and admitted she was considering
one but they were well over $1000. She tried on a few of her manual lens and settled on the Macro.
She never took it off. So much for interchangeable lenses! Eventually she bought a Pentax K100D
DSLR to use with her other lenses and bought her first Auto Focus lens after 30+ years of manual.

3. The combination. The Macro and *istD became her favorite camera and
was the one she used for her last photo shoot of flowers on May 10 2009.
She gave me the Auto Focus Macro I used for this photo of her camera.

Very nice memories, indeed. I bought my Sony a700 because it would take all of my existing Minolta lenses, so I understand the reasoning. :)
