The monument was erected to memorialize "The arrival at Tumwater of the first American colony On Puget Sound, October 1845" and was "Erected by the children of the late Leopold F. Schmidt, Tumwater citizen, according to his wishes".

I'm thinking I'd want my memorial to be set up at the Brewery, but that's just me:)!
