Hairy woodpecker, male

This woodpecker was working away on a birch snag at Nortel woods. Last week, a pileated woodpecker was working this same tree. The hole that the hairy is sitting by is one made the pileated. You can also see Tinder polypores on the snag.

I noticed that the birch trees there are mostly in bad shape and full of woodpecker holes. I like shots of downys and hairys on birches. The color of the bark complements them so well and in this case the red tinge on the head is like the cherry on top of what is already a perfect dessert!
