Velvet mite (Allothrombium)

Ferguson Forest. This pretty little red velvet mite was found crawling over a piece of Phragmites stem. At approx. 3mm, this guy is very big for a mite. This particular group of mites (which, by the way are classified with Arachnids)eat insect eggs. You will often see some of the smaller mites on insects, often many together, looking like tiny red dots.

Great shot Christine. You can clearly see the 8 legs, the fangs and the two segments of the body that would classify the mite as an Arachnid. Great macro. You and your Canon PowerShot are a good team. Vote :)
