I worked at Southwood after graduating from Southwood School of Practical nursing. It was staffed with caring people in every department. It is sad to see how the last owners left all that equipment and supplies to be strewn around like that.

I was a student at Pondville graduating in 1972.Our class started a hear book for which we paid a small monthly fee.Unfortunately Inever received one nor doI knowifonewaseverput together . Because I was a young mother to a child ( less then.a year oldI was allowed to live at homeUpton,Ma. contrary to the rules that students must live at Ponville during their training.so I did not know the other girls very well so I have not had contact with anyone from my class.
I would love to find a class picture or know if there is a class yearbook floating around.... thank-you Jayme Armstrong

I graduated from south wood community hospital in1983. 36 years later I am an rn with a bsn degree. I miss that hospital very much I worked there 18 years until it closed. What a fabulous place it was. I am still a practicing nurse. Loved that place. Great memories!

My Grandfather, Wilfred Arsenault, died in Pondville Hospital in 1953. Cause of death was listed as Hodgkins Disease. In 2013 I went to, I believe, Norfolk, Ma. Town hall and got a copy of his Death Certificate. So there is still some documentation available if you pursue a search. Though the building still stands it is in much disarray and some stories claim it to be haunted. The outside and front entrance appear the same as I remember from the early 50's when visiting my Grandfather with my Parents. It was a scarey place then as it is now. My younger brothers were not allowed admittance as they where considered to young.

My mother was treated at Pondville for five years and died the on March 21,1956, when I was nine years old. Is there any way to get her records. I need to know what type of breast cancer she had as my daughter has been diagnosed at age 41.

My grandmother was treated at Pondsville Hospital for Breast Cancer in the early 60's. Despite the bad prognosis she got in Fall River, she was cured and lived until 1979.

I worked at Pondville in the old Hosp. in the record room from 1969-1973. The Hosp moved to the new site in 1972 or so and we moved all the records and files at that time.

My grandfather was treated at Pondville for bowel cancer. They told my mother that he would not live long. I don't know what they did but he lived another 30 years and died at the ripe old age of 94. A family friend went there for radiation treatments for skin cancer. There were times when he did not have a ride so he walked the 45 miles from and back to home. Interestingly enough, when we moved to the area, I ended up working there until they closed. Those were the best 10 years of my career. I worked with the most caring people I've ever met. Their influence changed my life and hopefully the lives of many of my patients since. When Steward closed the doors, we transferred the outpatient services to an outpatient facility in Foxboro. All records were transferred to Norwood Hospital. Unless there is ongoing care, medical facilities are only bound by law to keep records for 10 years and mammography info for 30 years.

I worked there in 1959 and '60 just out of high school. And then I moved into one of the old buildings up the hill in the back. It was a cancer research hospital when I was there and a great place to work. I left to go into nursing probably because of having so many positive experiences there. Looking at photos is a real trip for me. I am so sad that it has fallen into disrepair.

My great grandfather had treatments there in the early 40s for Hodgkins. He died there in June 1943. I just spoke with the records dept @ Steward Norton hospital. She said that they don't keep records after 30 yrs. She said that IF the patient was around when Pondville closed & it transferred then their records would have too. I heard a news story a while back about another abandoned hospital that just had their records in the buildings still & people were breaking in. Since some of the buildings still stand I wonder if there are any old records still in there (since this was well before the age of the internet!)

Southwood closed its doors for good in 2003. Though some antiquated buildings have been demolished, six still remain.

If you are looking for records for Pondville - Southwood Hospital, start by calling Stewart Norwood Hospital and finding out where the records may be.

Does anyone else find it a little strange that there are no records for this hospital at all?
Guest 20-Aug-2013 21:08
My grandmother was treated at Pondville Hospital from 1930 till she passed away at home from cancer Nov 1932. She and her family would drive to Pondville from Bancroft for her treatments.

My great grandmother died at Pondville of cancer in 1937. I'm sure records are long gone. I'd like to know the date of the postcard image that is at the top of this page? Thanks.

I am a ccancer survivor. I had Hodgkins at the age of 23 (1971). I am still alive at 63 because of Pondville. It was a wonderful hospital and staffed by some of the best cancer doctors in the country. If was a research and teaching hospital. They even invited me to talk with some of the young doctors and I remember them observing as I got ready for a radiation treatment. I had 45 treatments.
I do have my records that I requested for one of my doctors. If Norwood was the last to own the hospital, I think they might be the ones to retain the records.

I had a cousin when she was only the age of 23 in 1972 was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. In 1972 when I was just 7 years old can remember going into the main entrance which was built in 1969.I remember the people when walking in with long hair (which was in fashion then)waiting in the waiting area. The nurses walking around had white uniforms and those white paper hats too.I was told to wait downstairs because you needed to be over a certain age when i went there with my parents and it made me sad because i wanted to see my cousin which was in severe pain from her cancer and radiation therapy ,but unfortunately she lost her battle with her Hodgkins disease.Incidentally the cure for what she had was discovered only 2 months later.sadly -if they had cured her ,she would still be alive today.I would like to know if there are any records accessable and/or available? unfortunately if there are any they are only accessable to immediate family only.

My dad died there from leukemia in 1964, his name was James Millard Converse, from Hanson, Mass. If anyone has ANY information, I would appreciate it. I was 6 years old and waved goodbye to him in the Ponville Hospital parking lot.

I found a letter from my grandmother written in August 1944 while in Pondville Hospital. She was expecting to be released. She may have been but died in October of 1944. I would also like to know if there are records available.

My Aunt was treated for breast cancer in 1961. As a 12 year old I will never forget the site of her chest burned black to a crisp from the treatment. It was horrible. She passed while there.

I posted a question about my dad passing in 1997 I was also wondering why there are no pictures of the hospital (interior/exterior) or very limited posted online. He had some radical treatment when he was there the 1st time but I guess it bought us 18 more years with him. I would have never realy known him.

My Dad was a cancer patient at Pondsville in 1935. Any way to get info. on patients back then?
Guest 29-Jun-2010 19:32
Yes, my own grandfather was a patient at that hospital probably 50 years ago or so while it was Pondville Hospital and dedicated to cancer patients. It is located in Norfolk, MA. It then became a full care hospital that was affiliated with Norwood Hospital called Southwood Hospital, Southwood Hospital was shut down in about 1997 due to low census. It sits empty with Jersey barriers blocking the entrance. Norwood Hospital still exists in Norwood, MA.

Yikes, it used to be so large - never knew that it started out as a cancer center!!
