If there is debris inside the 6th group, the 2 elements inside the cell can be seperated by removinb the retaining ring. It is sealed with lacquer and will require soaking with acetone or lacquer thinner. Fungus is usually between the 6th group and 5th group on this lens so further disassembly is unnecessary.

Hi Pete Thanks for the excellent description and the photos. My Sigma 400mm f5.6 had dirt (oil drops) in the 5th element, which I could take out by dis-assembling the lens following your instructions. Thanks a lot for that. I have another lens, a 180mm f2.8 APO, also from Sigma, where the first ring won't come out, I hope it's not glued into there. Will keep on trying ... but if you have come across the same issue, would be helpful to know how you solved that. Best regards, Armin
