One interesting observation about the Mallards that "winter" here at the Refuge. Upon completion of the act of mating; the male will assume a low position in the water and rapidly swim in a circle around the female. While this is going on, the female will wash herself off and then flap dry as show in the next photo. I have never witnessed any other duck breed doing this comical display of the male celebrating the accomplishment of mating.
