1964 - 1975: Men from Hialeah on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D. C. (descriptions below)

Hialeah, Florida

There were a lot of Hialeah boys who served during the Vietnam War Era in all five branches of the U. S. military, whether they enlisted, were drafted or went to Officer Candidate School after college. I would call them "boys" in the title for this page because that's what most of us were, but those who go into the military have earned the "men" description in my book even though most of us were deemed too young to legally drink alcoholic beverages off of military installations or vote. Being old enough to die for our country but not old enough to drink alcohol or vote is so damn stupid it defies description.

The names on the photo above were obtained from this website http://www.virtualwall.org/istate/istatfl.htm that lists the official Home of Record for every individual named on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. Home of Record is the location the individual gave for his home address at the time he entered military service. It is not their birthplace or where his family lived when he went into the service.

Not included in the names above is CWO1 Martin "Marty" Taber, U. S. Army, who was in Hialeah High's Class of 1965 but he didn't live in Hialeah. He lived at 3295 NW 102nd Street, east of Hialeah in the unincorporated area of Dade County. Marty was a helicopter pilot and his tour in Vietnam started on November 14, 1968. He perished in Kien Hoa on August 20, 1969, in a helicopter crash. His Vietnam Wall information is at:

Mark Clotfelter
Chief Warrant Officer, U. S. Army
361st Aerial Weapons Company "Pink Panthers"
WORWAC 68-9

Greater Love Hath No Man Than This,
That A Man Lay Down His Life For His Friend.
John 15:13

Mark loved sports cars, the Beach Boys, photography, Jan and Dean, The Ventures, Sherry, playing chess and flying. Mark was our only brother, and we hope you see that he is not just a name on The Wall..........he was a son, a brother, a friend, a cousin, a nephew, an uncle, a brother-in-law, and a fine pilot.

Mark began his tour in Vietnam on September 25,1968. He was assigned to the 361st Aviation Company Escort, The Pink Panthers, stationed at Camp Holloway in the Central Highlands. This unit primarily flew support for SOG (Studies and Observations Group) a joint service, highly classified, unconventional and clandestine operation. These missions were dangerous and demanding for both the ground elements and the supporting air assets. The 361st flew support for teams being inserted along the Cambodian and Laotian borders. These teams were from the 5th Special Forces based at Kontum.

Mark flew the AH-1G Cobra Helicopter for 9 months. During this time he was shot down twice, before being Killed in Action. On a mission not normally flown by the 361st, Mark as aircraft commander and Warrant Officer Michael Mahowald as pilot, on June 16, 1969, were shot down by hostile fire while scouting a remote highway for a convoy.

During his brief military career Mark was awarded the Army Aviator Badge, the Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters, the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal with "V" for Valor, the Air Medal with 21 oak leaf clusters, the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Vietnam Merit Medal with one bronze service star, and the National Defense Service Medal.

Mark's name appears on Panel 22 West, Line 57 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

He was 22 years old. He was the 22nd person to be Killed In Action from our hometown of Hialeah, Florida.

I grew up with Barry Brown. played all the games and fought all the fights.

he sent me a violet oriental style dress, once. Pretty but obviously a hooker dress. He didn't know...his mom was never the same. I also went to school with Susan Clotfelter who left such a touching memorial for her brother.

Saw a couple of posts about "watching planes land". I remember one very secluded little spot that was just off of Perimeter Road near the threshold of 9R. It was a heavily treed border around an old parking lot that was in the very south end of M.I.A.D.. Was dark and never any traffic. That was until Dade Public Safety Department Station 33 moved into the building. Surprisingly even then the lot was very quiet. Very few officers assigned to MIA back in those days. A few in the terminal and the Post Authority pretty much took care of everything else. I also worked in the terminal ('70-'75) as well as Bldg. 2149 in M.I.A.D. from '75-'79. And yes Don we have 'chatted" in the past. My dad was Don Innes from the MIA Tower.

Hi Cindy, it's the least I can do to help preserve the memories of these great men who gave all while serving in our military during wartime. My condolences go out to all of the families who lost their youthful loved ones.
