10th - "Das Boot"

Cheltenham, Glos.

(An intense undersea WWII drama following a day in the life of U-96)

Another play on words today! I think all the snow is beginning to get to me LOL!!! I read bits of Lothar-Günther Buchheim's novel 'Das Boot' for my German 'Higher' exam when I was at school - I enjoyed it immensely, and have since read it in English, as well as watching the mini-series on BBC TV (I believe the film was mini-fied for the telly...)

With all the snow around, using the car at the moment is right off the menu! I've been walking the eight mile round-trip to work and back since Wednesday but I'm beginning to get a bit bored with it now. I could get a bus almost door to door, but being a frugal Scotsman, I'd rather save my £2.50 and get some fresh air. So, with temperatures every morning around the -5C mark it's on with the T-shirt, jumper, fleece, Berghaus jacket, beanie hat and these puppies (and trousers of course!!); they afford a remarkable grip in the ice and compacted snow which are masquerading as streets and pavements here in Cheltenham

Great shadows in this... it sounds like they (and you) need a rest. Good for you doing that trip every day!

I do like the striped laces here! They add a bit of whimsy to an otherwise solemn still life.
Sheila12-Jan-2010 02:58
They look worn out! (Tired :-))

Excellent composition, nice shadows and textures. Now you can really say you walked miles to work in the snow...how many times have children heard that from their parents and wondered if it was really true!! - Racine

Beautiful in B&W...great POV, love the shadows and feel in this image!
Mieke WA Minkjan11-Jan-2010 03:50
excellent composition, had to converse the miles, which is about 12 km, that is heavy walking through the snow
Cindi Smith11-Jan-2010 02:55
An 8 mile round trip trek each day....good for you! Those boots were made for walkin'! Love it!

Good exercise for the new year. Don't forget your camera, I'm sure there's a lot to photograph on the way. :)

I saw Das Boot series on TV and I like the set up in this photo.
Your are to be commended on your humour, photographic inspiration, perhaps the 8 mile walks give you time to plan, but you turned this good stuff before the big freeze.
PS it's thawing done in Devon today.

Barbara Heide10-Jan-2010 18:09
how brave you are! Fresh air is worth more than 2£50... bu I must admit... it seems to be quite a hazzle to go to work...

Woudn't be good here, we get down to -30°C, but this year, its an exception we got balmy weather! Go figure.
Kevin Chester10-Jan-2010 14:57
Just think of the exercise, my local regular dog walk took me 2 1/2 hours today instead of the usual 1 1/2.
Gary Blanchette10-Jan-2010 14:29
Superior lighting here.
Phillip Normanton10-Jan-2010 14:23
A grand bit of shadowy light there :o) It's been gently thawing here all day... not sure if I want it to be all over or not!
Bernard Davis10-Jan-2010 14:16
When you get to be 60 you can have a free bus pass. Nice image with the dramatic lighting.
Fay Stout10-Jan-2010 13:19
Don't think I would ever want to go to work that badly to walk that distance in snow and bitter cold. I would definitely cough up the money for the bus! Looks like those boots are your best friend!
Guest 10-Jan-2010 13:12
A wonderful still-life!
Stephanie10-Jan-2010 12:32
"....and when I was a child, I used to walk 10 miles each way to get to school. You kids don't know how good you have it....."
Lovely boot with shadow capture Doug!
Kathryn10-Jan-2010 10:27
lol, I think we are all living in layers and layers,
and wearing heavy duty boots. Like the shot.
Yvonne10-Jan-2010 10:01
It must take you an age to get dressed each morning Doug! Great shot.
Guest 10-Jan-2010 09:55
nice still life, different lightening from underneath.
Ann...10-Jan-2010 09:35

Ha... Nothing wrong with some brisk walks and after a few weeks I am sure you'll feel the benefits too :-) I like the shadow on the wall...
J. Scott Coile10-Jan-2010 09:06
Keep on truckin' ;-)

Sounds like a brisk but healthy routine. Das Boot was my first German film. Probably watched it about 5 times in my college days.
