11th - "The Castle"

Cheltenham, Glos. view map

(Franz Kafka's nightmarish and surreal story of one man's struggle against bureaucracy)

Another 'rite of passage' author, I read Kafka works extensively in my teens. I loved 'The Castle' - the frustration and alienation of the protagonist struck a chord with me, and while The Trial and Metamorphosis are more well known, this is a fascinating and highly readable book by one of the 20th century's greatest novelists

I managed to get out for a bit of a walk yesterday, despite the on-off snow flurries. I wandered around Battledown, a posh housing estate quite near where I live here in Cheltenham. Most of the houses are post-War; they're all huge (this is a monied part of town!) and some are quite beautiful. Slip-sliding down the hill on the way home, I noticed this house - perhaps not a castle as such, but good enough to fit the bill, I think.

The file was opened into Camera RAW; slight adjustments were made to Clarity, Brightness and Exposure. Into CS3, and I cropped to a square, making sure there was enough space around the building for it to 'breath'. Next, I added a Duplicate layer which I converted to B&W via Channel Mixer, using Green preset I think. Next up was a circular vignette, but I thought that lightening it gave the photo an older, more 1900s look - I preferred that to a dark vignette. I added Gaussian blur at 15% to the vignette to help focus the eyes on the subject. Lastly, before flattening and resizing for the web, I Dodged and Burned a bit around the highlights and shadows of the building and on the roof to really bring out the details

It looks like a castle to me and the processing works really well here... hmmm the tower bit reminds me of a house down the road... maybe tomorrow's shot :)

Very well isolated and lots of fine details on the "castle" itself with your processing work. It really gives this house a foreboding look. As for the novel, if ever there's a good reason for learning German, Kafka's practically untranslatable prose is a good one. :)

Did the Addams family live there?
Chris11-Jan-2010 19:16
Bizarrely - you could have been wandering around the town of Auzances in la Creuse, there are several houses like this one. Beautiful image and effect BTW.

Beautifully processed and presented - Have you ever thought of running a processing course for all us "Photoshop challenged" people out here? :))
Mieke WA Minkjan11-Jan-2010 08:59
the way you describe it looks like a lot of work
I can see the connection with Kafka in your photo
nrcorby11-Jan-2010 08:10
Quite extraordinary. Light and airy with a splendid range of tones and, you are quite right, a turn of the century look. However the fence and bushes hide something. What lies behind?
Kathryn11-Jan-2010 07:32
This has to be one of my favourites, I love the mysterious feel to it - now must read the book. We're snowed in again 'up North', it's the Pennines.

Let me be the first to congratulate you on a well-worked and presented image. The vignette adds considerable depth to the shot and dates it considerably. In fact, a surreal representation of the image mirrors the book. Good work Doug..
