20100109 - Muddle

MonoMonth

Hmmm, not sure about this - had to bracket three exposures to get the foreground and the sky, this is a PhotoMangler bodge together of the under-exposed and the over-exposed versions. Then I did some Orton-y type stuff to it.
I like the thumbnail, just not entirely convinced by the 'bigger picture'.

I think it's one of those shots where it'd be easier just to go back when the light's coming from the other direction... or something :o)

Canon EOS 5D ,Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
1/25s f/6.3 at 17.0mm iso100 full exif

other sizes: small medium large original auto

Don't quite understand all you're saying
but I sure like your stunning landscape. Great stuff.

I quite like this snowy scene with the high key feel to it as well and agree that this would like a nice print. What is distracting to me when I viewed in original is that there are spots in the sky, upper right.
Cindi Smith11-Jan-2010 02:36
Has a highkey feel to it which is pretty cool to me. Artsy fartsy kinda stuff. Like it!
Stewart Mitchell10-Jan-2010 21:14
Winter personnified, I like the way the lean of the trees keeps the focus in the centre of the shot!
Barbara Heide10-Jan-2010 17:46

photographing snow is a real challenge, many shots are necessary, I just choose the one that reminds me of the feel of the moment. This is a charming place. Winter is so beautifull. Most of my friends are in florida, drinking frozen orange juice, not me, I prefer soft ice cream. :)
Gary Blanchette10-Jan-2010 14:03
I believe this would be breath taking printed.
Guest 10-Jan-2010 12:48
Cracking muddle!! I like it.
Bernard Davis10-Jan-2010 11:24
I love the snow on the branches, gives a 3D effect to them, thne the stream takes the eye away into the distance. Lovely scene. Voted

Winter wonderland!

Okay, time to be brutal... I think it's fantastic. Everything is so high key, which is fine, it is all about the snow anyway. All the dark tones come from the trees and the water, which give the image its form and shape. I think this really is terrific and works very well.. The two dark spots (whatever they are) in the sky are awful though, clone!!
Scott Browne10-Jan-2010 01:19
I like it. I think it works very well.
Walter Otto Koenig10-Jan-2010 01:07
Excellent wide shot and a difficult exposure for sure. Looks a bit to bright on my monitor though. Still a beautiful shot with lots of sharp details. :)
Ed McConnell10-Jan-2010 00:54

I love this! Very strong image with an infra-red feel to it.
lou_rozensteins10-Jan-2010 00:00
Very nice! The wideangle brings it together. Well done.
Timothy Guenther09-Jan-2010 23:36
This would probably be a good candidate for HDR software. I like the composition.
Frank Brault09-Jan-2010 22:52
It sure does look cold. I love the wide angle view and it works fine for me.
Guest 09-Jan-2010 22:50
It has a hint of one of those infra red photographs
Guest 09-Jan-2010 22:49
I looked at it in the thumbnail...only joking lol. I really like it, the bright tones work quite well, its odd having a brighter ground, then sky! Anyway, I think the right hand side of the image is significantly better then the left, maybe because its quite a bit darker in the trees?
Kathryn09-Jan-2010 22:46
Muddled puddle! Looks good to me, in a shivering kind of way.

It is extra bright, but it's also extra beautiful.

Here is what I see. (1) I was quickly drawn in by the range/contrast when I saw the thumnbnail on my Blackberry screen. (2) I desired a closer look from the little I saw. (3) Close study (about 5 minutes worth) scanning the close zoom all over my 2" screen revealed amazing details throughout the image. The snow adds so much strong contrast and pulls the composition together. I like it.
Mairéad09-Jan-2010 21:34
It certainly captures the feeling of this snowy landscape.
Guest 09-Jan-2010 21:32
Brrr ... but so beautiful!!
Ray :)09-Jan-2010 20:16
Don't think you should be too self-critical in cold conditions, and it's just one image out of many for the year!
Doug Cruden09-Jan-2010 20:10
Works for me! But it looks bloody cold with the snowy trees and iced-over stream...I hope you had your thermals on!!
Ann...09-Jan-2010 20:07
It all looks to be sweeping into the middle of the image - super highkey I think!
Colin Storey09-Jan-2010 19:57
Looks great large as well.
slhoornstra09-Jan-2010 19:53
It is very striking. with the oppression of icy breath closing in. V
Guest 09-Jan-2010 19:51

McGarva09-Jan-2010 19:24

Looks good, nice bit of mangling.
Stephanie09-Jan-2010 19:19
England has been turned into a winter wonderland!
I love this image Phillip! Could you have increased the "highlight" to show a bit more of the texture in the snow?
Kevin Chester09-Jan-2010 19:15
Looking good from here Phil, not sure what you wanted to achieve but you achieved a fine shot. Sounds like it was a bit of DIY HDR.
Nicki Thurgar09-Jan-2010 19:12
Aaah, wonderful, nothing like a snow covered valley with water running through...
