Evening light, Monument Valley, Arizona, 2009

It’s the play of light and shadow that gives this image its expressive qualities, in this case enhanced coloration and dimensionality. The textures of the great monoliths are brought into high relief by the angle of the sun. The entire right side of the butte closest to us, as well as the front of the tower in the background fall into deep shadow, which gives the huge rocks a sense of depth as they relate to space. The colors are richly saturated as well, giving the stark subjects, which arise from a desolate desert, a memorable form of beauty.

Without the clouds, the scene would become more descriptive and less expressive. The clouds provide a dramatic context, offering mood and atmosphere to complement nature's beauty here.

The cloudy sky is beautiful addition to this breathtaking scene.

We did not even have to wait, Carol. This image was there for the taking as soon as we arrived back at the Monument Valley parking lot. As for the illusion of depth here, it is the result of layering the image with two buttes instead of one, and the low angle of the light, which carves each butte into panels of light and shadow.

Wonderful depth here! And as usual, the true colors really sing at last light. Worth waiting for, I'd say!

Thanks, Linda and Sofia, for appreciating the beauty of this scene. The play of light on these rocks was very special at this moment, and the clouds played their part as well.
