It’s a wrap, Bucharest, Romania, 2009

Three construction workers are dwarfed by an enormous drape that describes the ornamental structure it is hiding. Bucharest is restoring many of its 19th and early 20th century buildings and this is one of them. This image is rich in incongruity – the drape is so much larger than the workers who stand below it, and the way it is folded back is almost a visual pun.

Coming from someone who is married into an architectural family, Celia, I am honored by your comment. You are right -- the image is rich in incongruities, not only of scale, but also comparing the life sized cartoon on the wrap to the real thing underneath. I don't think they were using the wrap to amuse -- rather, they were just trying to cover up the mess and give an inkling of what lay beneath. I saw things such as this all over Bucharest, but not on as grand a scale.

I think it is humorous the way the Bucharestians drape a lifesize cartoonish drawing of what it's covering rather than actually show the real thing itself! They seem to be very sure that it's a better option! It's quirky and amateurish, but I think it works! At least it's amusing! Perhaps that's what they were going for??!!?

The little "peep show" of what's underneath is also enticing and suspenseful! I love the scale incongruity of the people too-we get to appreciate the grandeur of the building even in its unfinished state. The modern grid of scaffolding also provides a great juxtaposition to the classic architecture of these buildings. Wonderfully seen Phil!
