Two-striped grasshopper (Melanoplus bivittatus) laying eggs

At this time of year if you are walking on a path of soft soil or light gravel, you will often find grasshoppers that are reluctant to move out of your way. These are usually females and they are seeking a spot in which to lay their eggs, and little will deter them! This one was on the side of a trail and was digging her abdomen into the gravel. It seems quite a chore for a small insect. I tried digging into the gravel and soil with my fingers to see how hard it was, and it was very difficult indeed!
