Energy, King Street, Toronto, Canada, 2009

Energy is very much a human value. And Toronto is full of energy, a city of vitality, dynamism, and spirit. People often don’t merely walk in Toronto – they stride vigorously, outpacing all before them. I made this image on King Street in downtown Toronto at the height of the evening rush. I focus on a woman, loaded down with three bags, who moves briskly into the sunset, shielding her eyes as she paces forward. I add context by layering a softly focused helmeted cyclist into the foreground. She moves in the other direction, her highlighted bent arm echo the bent arm of the woman behind her. The cyclist’s flaming red costume and backpack play against her shadowy anonymity. Together, these figures express the energy of one of Canada’s great cities.

Thanks, Merri. When you say: "These two push against each other forever in this moment yet are working almost completely in tandem," you show how well you have understood and interpreted this image. It is all about the human value of energy. And when you conclude that while these two forces are pushing against each other, yet are also "working almost completely in tandem" you also explain the incongruity that runs through this image.

Thank you Phil, for explaining the reasoning behind the focus. I can tell this shot was carefully timed and executed. Not a simple street 'snap'. So many things I notice here, the first being the obvious energy which both aligns and repels the 2 people involved in the action. The cyclist's face is not visible, yet her ear is. The walker's face is visible, but her ear is not. The cyclist's left arm is in perfect synch with the walker's left leg (as noted in the caption) and the former's body matches the latter's right leg. The walker's left arm and the cyclist's also show a somewhat mirrored synchronicity. These two push against each other forever in this moment yet are working almost completely in tandem.

Thanks for the metaphorical thoughts, Tim. I will vary my point of focus to make a point -- in this case, the focus is on the back person because she is in the sun and the foreground cyclist is in the shade. If I had focused on the shadowy person and put the brilliantly illuminated person in the background out of focus, the image would have been odd looking and distracting -- the eye would still want to go the person in the light, only she would be more difficult to read. As it is, the lady in the back of this shot is having a hard time reading her own destination -- she struggles against the sun to make sense of what she sees.

I really am drawn to this as a metaphor for urban life - strangers passing - each in a hurry. Also, I love the focus on the back person.
