The Eddistone Lighthouse used to be Smeaton's tower until it was replaced in recent years by a bigger model capable of landing a helicopter. The Eddistone Lighthouse is just visible to the naked eye in the open sea from the Hoe on a fine day. The upper part of Smeaton's tower was removed and relocated here on the Hoe as a memorial to this important landmark in Plymouth and maritime history.
