Deep-sea fishing boat captain, Gloucester, Massachusetts, 2009

I made this portrait of a deep-sea fishing boat captain as he starts up his engines and begins to back away from the dock. He is cautious and skillful – he plays the controls as if they were like a musical instrument. It is a large boat, full of tourists and fishermen, and his expression tells us how seriously he takes his job.

I agree, Tim -- this guy knows his stuff. He was very much immersed in his job. The name on his shirt seems informal, yet the attitude he brings to his job is thoroughly professional.

There is just the kind of attitude here that I want from my Captain.

How do we know that he has bitten off his fingernails, Rose? He might just like to keep them short. You may be right, however, about the stress level here -- threading a huge fishing boat through a busy harbor is not for the faint hearted.

Based on the fact that he's bitten off all his fingernails, I'd say Captain Dave is a seriously stressed out guy.
