Bagel cart, New York City, New York, 2009

A morning bagel is a ritual for many New Yorkers. In midtown Manhattan, there are carts full of them at most major intersections. This one is at 34th Street and Park Avenue – the man who operates it seems overwhelmed by customers at the moment. By using a 400mm telephoto lens, I make the crowd around him seem even more dense and frantic.

You are right, Tim -- they walk towards the stand, but do they intend to stop and buy? In a sense, they are part of the hubbub around them, yet apart from it because they are walking and the others are standing.

The two women next to the vendor - the one in the hot pink pants and her friend - seem an interesting counter point to the hubbub around them - calming spreading gossip.

There is nothing relaxing about the commuter rush hour in New York City. As for nourishment, some will scurry on to the office with their food, while others will eat it on the run. A slice of life, indeed. Everything here revolves around the expression of the man running the stand. Can you imagine feeding crowds of strangers under pressure every day, day in and day out?

This ritual doesn't look very relaxing or nourishing. It's a slice of life in the Big Apple.
