Sunset on the Annisquam, Gloucester, Massachusetts, 2009

A glorious summer sunset at the mouth of the Annisquam River paints an overhead canvas of layered clouds in reflected swirls and splashes of orange, red, gold, and gray. I used spot-metering mode on the sliver of sun itself to control exposure and get the most out of the reflected colors.

Thanks, Iris. I did spot meter on the sun, and yes, the balance of the image was significantly underexposed. I had to expose on the sun, or lose the color. I simply lightened the balance of the image with the "Fill Light" and "Brightness" sliders in Adobe Camera Raw.

Nature's drama.....beautiful. A question, Phil....if you used the spot meter on the sun, why didn't the rest of your image get significantly underexposed? How do you spot meter in this situation and still get such amazing colors and exposure, including the water foreground?

Nature paints the clouds with a setting sun here -- it was amazing. The entire sky was filled with different cloud densities and shapes. A gift of natural canvas.
