Waiting it out, New York City, New York, 2009

I saw this woman patiently waiting out the storm, huddling under an awning on the other side of Lexington Avenue. Using a long 400mm telephoto focal length, I made this image to capitalize on the muted primary colors around her. A folding, red-framed, windowed wall at the end of the awning rises up through the center of the image. The blue-framed bus shelter, diagonally across the intersection from my own vantage point, gives us a sense of place. Her orange blouse complements the bank of red, yellow and blue flowers at right, while a pedestrian wearing only black and white contrastingly walks past under a black umbrella at left.

You should patent that couplet, Tim. (Just watch out for the guy who wrote "April showers bring May flowers" -- he may sue you for copyright violation. Of course he has been dead for awhile -- a gentleman by the name of Thomas Tusser complied a collection of writings in 1557 called "A hundred points of good husbandry." In the April section, he wrote "Sweet April showers Do spring May flowers," and the rest is history. Thank you, Google.) As for this image, it was the flowers that drew my eye first. And then I found this woman backed into the corner. You should be familiar with this particular market -- we shopped together there during our New York shoot this past March. It was a lot colder then, and there were no flowers in the showers, at least none that I could see.

July showers bring August flowers - I find a connection here between the rain and the flowers.
