Crabronid wasp (Cerceris fumipennis) with Buprestid beetle prey

Bowesville Rd. area

This small wasp belongs to a family called the "Weevil Wasps". However, many such as this one, prey on other beetle species. This Cerceris specializes in catching small Buprestid beetles. There was a terrific battle going on with these two, as the wasp struggled to carry this beetle which was bigger than she was. She soon paralyzed the beetle and then tried to get it down the nest hole. When she could not do this, she dropped the beetle at the entrance and proceeded to dig another hole nearby!
