Cautious Curiosity

Southern Vancouver Island

Seeing a fawn ranks right up at the top of our list of 'favourite animal sightings'. This little one was almost as curious about us and we were about it, however the doe was nearby and keeping close reign on the fawns actions. Fawn facts: During the first two weeks of life, fawns are too weak to keep up with the doe. The little ones take cover while the doe goes off to find food and water. Every few hours, the doe will come back to the vicinity and call to the fawns. They'll come to her and nurse, which may only take 30 seconds or a minute, then the fawns will go hide for another couple of hours.

Lovely, I saw one with her little one, going to work, just 20 minutes away from San Francisco, yesterday. The most refreshing way to start a day.
