Expressing wisdom & the knowledge of ancestors, Waiata are traditional Maori chants or even contemporary song compositions which are traditional in style.
Although many tribes till have their own waiata (which were composed centuries ago), many chants or songs have become common property over the years. It is considered a mark of flattery to have one tribe want to sing another tribe's chants. Tradition waiata are performed in unison with few actions and no musical instrustments.
