West of the Site, Applegate Cove, and Boat Retrieval

Cold Bay Air Force Station, AK

There was a knock on my door. It was Gene Smith. He told me that he and Steve were heading for Applegate Cove. Did I want to go along? They were heading there to retrieve our squadron boat and motor. Some of our crew had left it there and hiked all of the way back to the radar site. I remember wondering why they hiked back rather than bringing the boat. Perhaps they ran out of gas? Why didn't they go back later and get the boat themselves? I was told they were too tired from the hike back. Anyway, I agreed to go along. Well, it so happens that to get to the boat we needed to hike quite a distance through the tundra. That consisted of hopping from one spongy crest to another for a considerable part of the way. It was slow going and tiring, but we eventually made it to the boat. We started the outboard, and made our way around the point from the west side to the squadron boat launch on the east side on the Lagoon. There we found the truck(jeep?) and trailer that the others had left, and returned with the boat to the Station. The whole episode seemed senseless. However, it was another opportunity to explore a new area. I may not recall the reason that the boat had been left, but I certainly recall how difficult it was walking through the tundra without a trail to follow. This is a photo of Applegate Cove where the boat was left, looking west from the Site.
