When I was a small child my older brother, Walter, and I spent many days hiking and exploring the extensive parks in our downstate Illinois hometown. I grew up following trails along the bluffs high above the Mississippi River, looking down upon vistas of water and forests, and imagining myself to be an explorer. With such a background, it was natural for me to take advantage of the outdoor opportunities that Cold Bay, Alaska afforded. When weather permitted, I spent much of my free time outdoors hunting, fishing and exploring.
