Last light, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, 2009

Exposing on a distant sliver of golden sun setting behind a curtain of clouds, I only suggest the vast canyon itself. I tried to barely define the buttes rising from the dark floor of the canyon. allowing my viewers to fill in the details with their own imaginations. It is not what we see here that is important. It is what we think we see.

Thanks, Alina, for appreciating my efforts to express the beauty and wonder of the Grand Canyon in a different way here. The image is obviously stimulating your imagination. We can't really see the Colorado River here, but we know it is there, and we know that over the centuries, it is responsible for making this wondrous place. This abstract view of the Grand Canyon at the fringe of the day and the edge of night is designed entirely as an appeal to the imagination.

Thanks, Tim, for noting the importance of mystery in expressive photography. Mysteries challenge the imagination, and cause us to think, feel, and most importantly, wonder. The natural world should be a catalyst for wonder, and if our photos can make it so, all the better.

Natural wonders can often seem to be mysteries - I think they tap into the great mysteries that define life. Here, by leaving the canyon, the attraction, in shadows you reinforce the mystery.

"The last glimmer of light" was the whole point here, Jenene. I wanted to push vision to its limits with this image -- the Grand Canyon, one of the most colossal sights on earth, has been reduced here to a visual suggestion. I love your "restorative slumber" thought. Thank you.

I think of the final moments before sleep, the last glimmer of light slips beyond the horizon and even this great treasure lapses into a restorative slumber. Beautiful image, Phil.
