Checkmate!

Temple of Heaven, Beijing

The concept of the Chinese chess, mostly a men's game, is very much like that of the Western version. The major difference is that each piece is represented with a round wooden part where a character is carved on the top. Green and red colors are used to differentiate the two parties. There are the pawns, emperors, ministers, horses, cannons, etc, but absolutely no empresses! A flat surface on the ground is good enough to set the battlefield; the players and spectators will squat for as long as when the players call quit.
