We had camped near the beach of a saltwater lagoon. The beach of the lagoon was strewn with driftwood timber that had washed ashore. A few timbers caused us to wonder if they had been masts of wrecked ships. The group started our hike along that beach, beginning our long day-hike that lasted from about 8:30 a.m. until about 11:00 p.m. We were to hike that day over to the Bering Sea on the other side of the Alaska Peninsula. Walking the beach in a westerly direction, we soon reached a small freshwater creek emptying into the lagoon. Then we followed the creek upstream.
