A yellow-green hue marks early spring along the upper Mattaponi River just above the Zoar Nature Trail put-in. From this point on river levels normally drop noticeably in response to phototranspiration which kicks into gear as the leaves emerge on the trees. Each tree acts as a biological "sump pump", pulling down local groundwater levelsand, ultimately, river levels as well.
