John Edmondson VC Rest Area, Rowes (Rose) Lagoon Wollogorang NSW view map

This is one of those occasions when you really wish Google Maps would get their guano together.

The Federal Highway to Canberra is also known as the Remembrance Driveway, along which you will find rest stops dedicated to soldiers who (mostly posthumously, unfortunately) were awarded the Victoria Cross, Australia's highest medal for valour.

One such stop is in the district named Wollogorang, where you won't find much or many people, but you WILL find a lagoon (which is in fact usually dry) called... well, according to Google Maps if you're IN the lagoon it's called Rose Lagoon, and if you're on the (usually theoretical) BANK of it it's called Rowes Lagoon (no apostrophe, I note). a sign at the location names it "Rowes Lagoon". The name "Rowes" appears twice on the sign BUT it's a clear amendment of an earlier name on the sign.

One of the aforementioned rest stops is alongside it; specifically the John Edmondson VC Rest Area on the Federal Highway to Canberra. Which Google Maps will tell you is the EdmONson VC Rest Area. (Though I've now (Dec 2023) submitted an edit request on that.) The Australian War Memorial shows his name with a second D, as does a sign at the location. If you're going to pay respect to someone, spelling their name correctly is a good start.

Anyway, a herd of cattle was just on the other side of the fence from the rest stop. Another car was parked at the stop; a guy was brushing his black Labrador, then settled in to have a coffee.

I start shooting pictures.

The Lab runs up to me with his tennis ball in his mouth, and sizes me up for a moment or two. Satisfied, he spits the ball at my feet and looks up expectantly.

"Don't you have an owner to do this for you?"

{Expectant stare}

"Oh, OK." I pick up the ball and throw it. Now when I throw it AWAY from the fence, the cattle are happy. If I throw it ALONG or TOWARD the fence, then Boss Bovine (pictured) takes extreme umbrage and starts stomping toward the fence, bellowing and protesting, while Da Gang watches on in the background.

Should I attempt to approach to get a closer shot, however, Boss Bovine beats a hasty retreat.

So the way I see it, Boss Bovine figures that I'm like one of da Feds, best avoided in da interests of doin' business. The black Lab, however, is like a rival gang member trying to muscle in on da gang's territory.
