2849 The Stand

Penrose State Forest NSW

This stand of trees sits at the top of a hill in the Penrose State Forest. The surrounding ones have been logged, as the remains of some trunks scattered around the hill show.

This shot was taken from the Kingsbury VC rest stop off the Hume Highway between Sydney and Canberra. The route serves as the Remembrance Driveway, which commemorates those who served in World War II and beyond with the planting of trees, groves and parks. The winners of the Victoria Cross in World War II and Vietnam are commemorated by rest stops being named after them, usually with a few features like toilets, water sources, picnic areas, in some cases coffee services, and a panel giving some details of the person for whom the stop was named.

Unfortunately Bruce Kingsbury seems to have drawn a rather short straw with his rest area. Not all of them have a particularly idyllic outlook... in fact, it's inland Australia, it's safe to say that none of them do, but some offer a better outlook than others... and this stop is rougher than most. It consists of an unpaved loop into the bush where you'll find a couple of picnic tables and some public toilets (more correctly described as furnished holes in the ground) with hand washing taps that either don't work (men's room) or barely work (women's' room). Even the panel which relates the deeds which earned him the VC is missing. (He re-established the right flank of a position in Papua during World War II, clearing a large number of enemy positions before being killed by a sniper.) However this is one of the three original rest stops along the new route (established in 1995), and 13 years in the bush isn't going to do anyone's appearance any favours.

It's not a place I plan to visit after dark, though...
