The body of St. Francis Xavier was laid to rest in a grave for 8 ˝ months after his death in China and is still periodically on display in Goa -- remarkably preserved. He was canonized in 1614. The Pope requested the corpse’s right arm be cut off and brought to Rome for the canonization. When they cut it off it was bleeding! In 1952, a statue of St. Francis Xavier was built in Malacca to commemorate the saint. Originally, the statue was completely constructed with the right arm in place. However, the morning after the consecration ceremony, a large casuarina tree fell on it and broke off the right arm – forever missing just like that of the corpse’s!
